Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) is a professional course for which the students are awarded the degrees in medicine and surgery upon successful completion of the course. The course aims at imparting the quality education and training to students to help contribute to the growing sector of health and medicine.

All about MBBS – Considered to be one of the most prestigious courses a student can pursue, the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery course - or to give it its proper Latin name, Medicinae Baccalaureus, Baccalaureus Chirurgiae – more popularly known as MBBS, is the predominant medical undergraduate course in India. It is the accepted route to becoming a doctor of modern medicine in the country.

The course is regulated by the Medical Council of India and is spanned for four and a half years divided into semesters, followed by a compulsory internship for a year.

The minimum eligibility for the course is 10+2 with the subjects- Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Different institutes have different cut off marks however the selection is made on the basis of the entrance exams conducted either on the national level or by individual institutes.

As can be expected, the competition for seats in an MBBS course is intense. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), in reply to a question, asked in the Lok Sabha on March 23, 2018, shared that the total number of MBBS seats in the country is around 66,620. For these seats, the number of candidates annually applying is close to 13 lakh.

The tuition fee varies according to the government-funded or private colleges. The average fees range around Rs. 35,000 per Annum in government aided colleges to around Rs. 2 Lakhs pa. However, AIIMS is one such institute with the fee structure as low as around Rs. 6000.

Who should opt for MBBS course?

Students who have a keen interest in learning the basics of the human body, its workings and also the diagnosis of diseases and their cures, should opt for this course. This course has a structure which develops a person’s psyche towards the feelings of service and ailment of the sufferers of various diseases. The students, after doing this course, also become an active participant in the community as they are always ready to help the ones in need through their medical practices.

MBBS Duration:

The complete duration of the course is five and a half years which includes a rotating internship of one year. The course is usually divided into 9 semesters of 6 months each. Apart from the regular courses, the students are also supposed to participate in hands-on training in the wards and out-patient departments. This provides the student with real-life experiences in practising and performing clinical procedures integral to their further practice as a doctor.

If a person does not qualify in the NEET exam, he/ she cannot pursue MBBS/ BDS in India, There are NO other alternatives at this point in time?

The options available are:

  1. Pursue other courses. Should apply for other courses as a standby/ contingency plan
  2. Pursue MBBS overseas, in countries like the Philippines, Ukraine, China, etc.
  3. Start all over again; study well & give another shot at NEET next year (provided you are not above 25 years of age).

BUMS

BUMS stands for Bachelor of Unani Medicine and Surgery. This discipline aims at treating patients using the Unani system of healing. The course is 5.5 years long.

BPT (PHYSIOTHERAPY)

BPT stands for Bachelor of Physiotherapy. This discipline uses massages, exercises and movement of muscles to treat patients who are have suffered injuries from accidents or are recovering from surgeries. The course is 4.5 years long.

B.V.SC. & A.H.

This course is popularly known as Bachelor of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry. This discipline focuses on the use of biology and technology to treat and prevent diseases occurring in animals. The course is years long.

BOT (BACHELOR OF OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY)

BOT course focuses on Occupational Therapy. This discipline is all about using exercises, training, aiding devices, environmental adaptation and equipment to treat patients suffering from physical, mental, emotional and neurological limitations. The course is 4.5 years long.
